“My ceramic work often takes the form of social comment. I frequently use historical models as reference or mixed with contemporary influences, subverting familiar forms to represent something other than their intended design and function.”
Karen makes satirical pieces packed with fun alongside a range of functional mugs and cups. Her intelligent and witty Trilogy of Death series was inspired by a copy of the Staffordshire pottery piece The Death of Munrow. Karen made two contemporary companion pieces using the same elements as the original work, ie the man and tiger but she has re-arranged them to remark on contemporary social issues. The Death of Sainsbury’s turns everything both metaphorically and literally on its head commenting on the simplicity of the food chain and the predominance of supermarkets within it.
