Susan Laughton – Safekeeping

1st – 29th June
Wed, Thurs, Fri, Sat. 11am – 5pm

“My paintings and drawings evolve from half-remembered glimpses seen from the corner of my eye, fleeting juxtapositions elusive to photography”

The landscape is Susan’s starting point, not as a picturesque or static view, but as a source of man made and natural structures, surfaces and colour from which her reductive personal responses develop. Man made structures in particular impose their presence – structures that create tension within space and mark the passage of time and distance.

Process and materials are important to her as a way of allowing the paintings to emerge as objects in their own right. Structured and methodical approaches are combined with spontaneous and intuitive reactions.

In May 2015 Susan was the first Staithes Studios guest Artist in Residency. During her stay at the things that caught her eye and fed into the body of work she produced based on the residency were natural rock formations, edges, outlines, weathering and erosion balanced by observations of the manmade in the form of fishermen’s huts at Port Mulgrave, the giant granite boulders of the harbour wall.
