Sea Gardens of Staithes – Laney Birkhead
1st July – 29th July
Wed, Thurs, Sat, Sun. 11am – 5pm
Laney is an artist printmaker who enjoys combining a variety of printmaking methods on the same print. Using carborundum grit in various grades she creates deep tones and textures. A range of mark making and drawing styles within the same image are also applied to her paintings.
Laney’s current creative practice is inspired by beekeeping and her passion for helping raise awareness of the plight of our British bees and other pollinators. A recent residency in Staithes has allowed observation of how small sea gardens, nearby wild coastal spaces and the heather moors provide important habitat for the early bees awakening in springtime in small discreet ways.
Laney has exhibited prints at the Pushing Print Festival in Margate, the Flourish Printmaking Award in Mirfield and the National Original Print exhibition in London. She has also been selected for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. In 2014 she was awarded the ‘Harrowells’ Prize for the best original print in the show at the Great North Art Show in Ripon Cathedral. In 2015 she has won 2nd Prize for her print work at the Harrogate Open at the Mercer Gallery.
