Stef Mitchell

Painting

Through painting Stef documents space light and energy observed from her immediate location of Staithes and further afield along the Yorkshire coastline, moors and woodlands. Paintings are made based on a visual and sound memory of places walked. Photography is used as an aid to record form, colour, light and line. Photography is quick and unlaboured so as to catch a glimpse rather than frame a view.

After a degree in photography and sound Stef completed post graduate studies at Goldsmiths London followed by a second degree in Fine Art (First Class Hons) where she specialised in painting. Her paintings have been awarded the Selectors Prize at the Ropewalk Gallery, the Browne Smith Baker Prize at Hull Ferens Open and have been shown in the RWS Contemporary Watercolour Prize.

Stef has exhibited her prints nationally and internationally in the Netherlands, Finland and Sweden. She has exhibited as feature printmaker at the Craft Centre and Design Gallery in Leeds and has had her work included in an international exhibition of Artists Books in the Liverpool Biennale in 2014 and 2016. She exhibited in Connections North: Mirror Images in 2015. Her prints have been shortlisted for the Flourish Award in 2014 and 2015 and in 2018– 19 her work was shown in the Newlights Prize Exhibition.

She has recently, along with Ian been artist in residence for the Yorkshire Wolds Way National Trail celebrating its 40th anniversary with an exhibition of paintings and prints at Beverley Art Gallery. Her solo show Northern Flora was recently shown at the Ropewalk Gallery.

Stef Mitchell Printmaking

Working within the historical tradition of nature monotype print, Stef documents walks, hedgerows and field edges  making prints and artists books. Prints are made directly using the plants in the process, each piece is an original as only one can be made of each.

She has exhibited as feature printmaker at the Craft Centre and Design Gallery in Leeds and has had her work included in an international exhibition of Artists Books in the Liverpool Biennale in 2014 and 2016. Her prints have been shortlisted for the Flourish Award in 2014 and 2015 and in 2018–19 her work was shown in the Newlights Prize Exhibition.
